Goodwill: Donate Stuff Create Jobs

After all of my moves and this last one in particular, PURGING is at the top of my "to do" list when trying to organize a new home. Actually, I've tried to stick to a mantra for the past year...when I bring a bag or a large item into our house  I start a Goodwill pile and make a date to drop things off.
I shop AND drop at Goodwill, have been for years. I usually get to know the people who work at the donation drop offs pretty well and know them by name. This is one of the reasons that Goodwill is my favorite place to donate and I frequently talk myself out of selling things and just donate...because of the people of Goodwill.
 Goodwill Industries International, Inc.
This is NOT a sponsored post... I recently was sent this Public Service Announcement about Job Creation at Goodwill and I have to say, I had never really thought about the chain reaction of job creation or sustainability that my baby clothes, pillows, bed frames and lamps have generated over the years.  I rarely share things like this (I think I've only shared one other post regarding a public service type message) and likewise, this message impressed me so much that I feel I need to share it with you.
I've ALWAYS been impressed by businesses and organizations that don't allow individuals with disabilities including Veterans with disabilities to be shut out of jobs.  This is near and dear to my heart.  Not to mention that Goodwill has created..yes CREATED almost 300,000 jobs this year....due to your donations. That is amazing to me. Our junk is funding jobs.
Did you know that donating one bag of clothing and one bag of books can equal up to 2.3 hours of on-the-job training for someone in your community? Add to that a used lamp, a dusty computer and perhaps a box of DVDs and CDs, and that number nearly doubles to 5.2 hours.
A simple item donated to Goodwill® can help provide job training programs, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people who have disabilities, lack education or job experience, or face other challenges to finding employment. In fact, Goodwill is the leading nonprofit provider of job training programs and career services in the United States and Canada.

So, what can you do to be part of this amazing movement?
- Go here and watch Goodwill's PSA about how donating stuff creates jobs and who benefits from Goodwill job creation.
- Not sure about where your local Goodwill is? I know that in my old town of Tulsa, OK there were several within just a small area. If you aren't sure about where to donate, go to www.goodwill.org to find stores and donation sites near you.
- Still not convinced? I was amazed when I went to the Goodwill Donation Impact Calculator to see just how many hours of service programs your donations can create in  your own community.
I also didn't really know about all the amazing things that Goodwill does for communities. For example, in my new County, The Goodwill is affiliated with Easter Seals..they have a parent support organization, autism programs, a Hospice program, as well as their core commitment to disabled and disadvantaged children and families.

*A fun little thing....Goodwill San Francisco (SFGoodwill.org) follows me on Pinterest! I love following them back! Love you guys!

I believe in this mission. You know I'm all about shopping second hand, re-use, recycle, upcycle, low-cost ways to furnish your home. I will  be using the hashtag #donatestuffcreatejobs whenever I donate or shop at Goodwill. Follow me on Instagram (@amysagedemik to see what I donate and what I purchase at Goodwill!
XXXOOO.
